Welcome from Dean Wixson

Welcome to the Fall 2014 edition of Educate Magazine. The UNCG School of Education is ‘making’ our spaces, faculty and students ready for the next generation of learning. But what does this mean?

Last month, the School of Education was the only North Carolina institution to receive a highly competitive federal Teacher Quality Partnership grant from the U.S. Department of Education. This grant will further UNCG’s efforts to emphasize technology integration across all teaching fields as well as recruit, train and support more Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM)  teachers.

With this $7.7 million in new grant funding, we will develop cutting edge programs in which teacher education candidates, alongside university and school-based faculty, learn about the innovative and effective use of existing and emerging technologies. Strategies such as creating hands-on “makerspaces” in seven area schools in Guilford and Forsyth Counties and a high-tech summer camp at UNCG will provide new opportunities for experiential learning for our students and faculty, as well as area teachers and schoolchildren.

In this issue of Educate, we celebrate the completion of our newly renovated Michel Family Teaching Resources Center (TRC), and introduce you to the SELF Design Studio, our new makerspace area within the TRC. We profile the planning and people supporting this innovative project, as well as provide an overview of the faculty projects planned this year that will bring the SELF Design Studio to life.

We profile two departments within our School that continue to receive national and international recognition for the quality of their programs, faculty, alumni, and students. Our Counseling and Educational Development department has been ranked third in the nation for the second year in a row by U.S. News and World Report for graduate programs in student counseling and personnel services. And faculty within the Educational Research Methodology department continue to build upon their international reputation as leaders in the field of education assessment and measurement.

We introduce you to our new faculty members joining us this year, and are delighted that we continue to recruit and retain nationally recognized faculty in our School.

I am proud of the faculty and staff who continue to dedicate their time and energy to ensure the UNCG School of Education leads the way for the next generation of educators.

It is an exciting time to be a Spartan educator.
